I do not have any CRT in my apartment. I tried a different VCR connected directly to my Samsung HDTV: the decoder in the HDTV produces jitter. It also has some "clipping", but not as much as the DMR-ES25.
I recorded a video of the tape playing on the HDTV screen, but obviously the results of this are a poor approximation. In addition, I have captured the HDMI output from my audio/video receiver. By default there is a lot of "clipping", but with the Contrast level set to -6 it is good and the jitter is corrected.
I'm not an electronics expert or technician, so I do not know how to perform the examination procedures you suggested.
