So, after collecting enough magic pixie dust, I've come up with an AQ algorithm that just might work. Its purpose is to avoid blocking in flat areas like regular AQ, but more importantly, avoid blurring in relatively flat textured areas, such as grass at a football game or film grain. Its not particularly good at cartoons; I wouldn't use it on anime/cartoons.How to use AQ:
1. Add --aq-strength X to the commandline, where X is a value between 0.0 and 1.0 (or if you want, higher, there's no technical limitation). 0.1-0.4 is weak AQ, 0.6-0.8 is strong AQ. 0.5 is recommended.
2. The default sensitivity, 20, will hopefully avoid changing bitrate too drastically in CRF mode, or screwing up ratecontrol too much in 1-pass bitrate mode. However, it will perform considerably better in 2pass bitrate than 1pass bitrate mode. Sensitivity 0 will try to avoid moving bits between frames, at the cost of not improving very flat frames.
Note: the default is too high in 0.47. 13 or 14 makes a good default. I will fix this in the next update.
2a. In 2pass, use AQ on both passes with the same settings.
2b. Use qcomp=1.0 if you use AQ.
3. Watch in wonder as all the blurred details come back to life and the SSIM of your video rises. In summary, recommended settings: --aq-strength 0.5 --aq-sensitivity 13 --qcomp 1.0.
Jetzt muss Brother John seinen HQ-test nochmal machen.
